TOWSON, Md. – The UMBC women's tennis team completed an impressive four-match sweep of their opponents in the Tiger Classic at Towson Center Tennis Courts.
In the opener on Friday, the Retrievers handled the Loyola Greyhounds in their match by a 5-0 count. Junior Madlena Kurasz teamed up with Victorsson in doubles play, and the duo were able to win, 6-2, 6-3. In singles play, sophomore Mariami Dolashvili and freshmen Laura Ambrozic, and Charlotte Tonjann defeated their opponents comfortably. Freshman Alice Taylor got her first career win, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-2.
In the match against hosts Towson, the freshman tandem Tonjann and Ambrozic clinched the doubles point for the Retrievers, defeating their opponents, 6-4, 6-4. Dolashvili won her match against Lucy Williams, 6-2, 6-2. Another new player stepped up for the Retrievers in freshman Hannah Victorsson, who clinched the match for the Retrievers when she defeated Towson's Barbora Vasilkova, 7-5, 7-5.
In their penultimate match on Sunday, the Retrievers took on George Washington. UMBC received a default win in the doubles point, giving them an advantage heading into singles play. Dolashvili was the first Retriever to get a point, defeating her opponent Grace Egger, 7-6, 6-2. Ambrozic fell in a thriller to GW's Allison Hansen, losing in the tiebreaker, 15-13. Taylor clinched the match for UMBC, defeating Egle Jakuciunaite 6-2, 6-4.
The final match of the weekend versus St. Joseph's might have been the most exciting. Taylor and Tonjann won the doubles point, 8-7(3). Both of the singles matches the Retrievers won went into a tiebreaker. Dolashvili defeated Maureen Devlin 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 and Ambrozic clinched the match for the Retrievers 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
