Philadelphia – The UMBC women's tennis team fell late Sunday evening to Drexel, 4-3, ending their three-match winning streak. The Retrievers move back to .500 (5-5) on the season, while the Dragons improved to 8-2 for the year.
Singles matches were played first, and the games were split, 3-3, between the teams. No. 1 freshman Olga Baikulova (Vladikavlcaz, Russia) handled her opponent, 6-1, 6-3. UMBC lost at positions 2, 3, and 4 in close matches. Sophomore
Madlena Kurasz (Zlotoryja, Poland) and senior Josefin Strange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) won at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions respectively, Kurasz triumphed 6-3, 6-3, and Strange-Jonsson won 6-2, 6-4, meaning the doubles point would clinch the match.
In doubles play, Bowsher/Pivonka of Drexel defeated Kurasz/Berghaus, 8-3. Dolashvili/Strange-Jonsson lost a tough set (8-6) to Coria/Winkler, clinching the match for Drexel.
The Retrievers will head west for their Spring Break to play a series of three matches against Nevada, Seattle, and Sacramento State. Their next home match will be Friday March 28th, when they host the Saint Joseph's Hawks.
