Lowell, Mass.-- The UMBC volleyball team took
home a 3-0 victory on Sunday. Head coach Ian Blanchard picked up
his 150th win of his career with the win on Sunday. UMBC moves to
10-11, 4-4 AE on the year.
The Retrievers found themselves down early on in the first
before junior Sherelle
Walker(New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) put together three kills
to distance the sleeve from the River Hawks. Walker and the
Retrievers would keep that lead, until a 4-0 run late put the set
away. Freshman Paola
Rojas (San Loerenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) had two
blocks on the run, ended by senior Hannah
Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales), who laid down a
kill.
The second stanza saw the Retrievers and River Hawks go back and
forth with neither team gaining a distinct advantage.

Mlemchukwu (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) took control with
a kill, followed by a pair of Rojas winners to take a 15-10 lead.
UMass Lowell would fight back, cutting the lead to 18-16 forcing a
Retriever timeout. Back and forth the two would go, before UMBC
finished off the set with a 25-22.
The final stanza saw the Retrievers jump out ahead early.
Mlemchukwu and Walker led the charge, pushing UMBC out to a 9-1
lead. Walker finished off the match with a kill, winning the set
25-13 and the match 3-0.
Mlemchukwu lead the charge with 12 kills on the day. Walker
chipped in ten for the Retrievers and one block. Schmidt added nine
winners for UMBC in the win.
UMBC returns home next weekend in pivotal America East matchups.
The Retrievers take on Stony Brook at 7:00 p.m. on Friday,
before facing Hartford on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
