BALTIMORE – UMBC women's soccer
eliminated a one-goal deficit, with three straight scores in the
second half en route to defeating UMass Lowell, 3-1, in America
East action on Thursday night at Retriever Soccer Park. The Dawgs
improve to 10-3-2 on the season, marking the program's eighth
10-win season and the second under third-year head coach Leslie
Wray.
The Retrievers received goals from three different players,
including a three-point effort and the game-winning goal from
senior midfielder Jessy Brown
(Plantation, Fla./American Heritage).
UMBC is unbeaten in its last four league games to improve to
2-1-2 in America East play, while UMass Lowell falls to
5-9-1overall and 2-3-1 in the conference.
After a scoreless first half, UMass Lowell was able to get on
the board in the 52nd minute on a header from freshman midfielder
Laura Gagnon. Sophomore midfielder Taylor Chianese setup the header
with a centering pass in the box and Gagnon battled a UMBC defender
to punch the ball in past goalkeeper Jen Nance
(Millersville, Md./Severna Park) for her first goal of the
season.
The Retrievers wasted no time evening the score, as a pass in
from the wing 3:36 later by red-shirt freshman forward Destinee
Morris (La Plata, Md./La Plata) slipped through the defense for
a waiting Amira Walcott
(Beltsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt), who punched in her first goal
of the season to knot the contest at one apiece.
Less than two minutes later, UMBC took advantage of a hand ball
in the box by the UMass Lowell defense. Brown beat goalkeeper Jill
Carlson on a penalty kick for her sixth goal of the season, her
third game-winner, with 31:26 remaining in the matchup.
The Retrievers added insurance with senior midfielder Paige Preston's
(Freehold, N.J./Freehold) second goal in as many games. A corner
kick from senior back Morgan Taylor
(Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) was headed back into the box by
Brown. Preston's header avoided the swatting hand of Carlson and
dropped in to give UMBC a 3-1 lead in the 70th minute.
UMBC outshot UMass Lowell, 15-10, in the contest, including a
10-6 differential in the second half.
Nance finished with five saves in the victory.
Game Notes
-UMBC evened the all-time series to one apiece.
-Jessy Brown moved into a tie for ninth on UMBC's career assist
list with a total of nine for her career, tying current teammate Melissa
Hummel. Brown also moved into a tie for fourth on the
Retrievers' all-time games played list (72).
On the Horizon
-UMBC hits the road in back-to-back contests, starting with a
trip to West Hartford, Conn., for a 2 p.m. matchup against
first-place Hartford on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Alumni
Stadium.
