BALTIMORE- Visiting Towson used a late 5-0 run to overcome a
UMBC lead and defeated the Retrievers, 12-9, in blustery conditions
at UMBC Stadium.
UMBC was led by freshman midfielder Pat
Young (Ewing ,N.J./Christchurch (Va.)), who scored three
goals and added an assist and junior face-off specialist Phil
Poe (Harwood, Md./DeMatha), who controlled 15 of 25
draws.
But a pair of Tigers stood out in their victory. Junior
attackman Thomas DeNapoli scored seven goals and added three
assists in the game, while senior goalkeeper Andrew Wascavage made
15 saves on the evening.
The Retrievers never trailed in the game until 1:29 remained in
the third quarter.
UMBC took three two-goal advantages in the first half. After
taking a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes, Young scored his second of the
night, blistering a shot from eight yards out past Wascavage after
taking a feed from classmate Nate
Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) to give the hosts a 5-3
lead 4:05 into the second quarter.
Young gave his squad a 7-5 advantage with just 3:03 to play in
the first half, but Towson took the momentum into the break with
two scores 46 seconds apart and the teams were to halftime
deadlocked at 7-7.
UMBC (2-5) senior attackman Scott
Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C./Terry Fox) gave the Retrievers
their final lead at 8-7 on a quick shot inside after a Lewnes pass
from behind the cage. That goal occurred with 3:58 to play in the
third quarter, but DeNapoli tied the score 1:21 later and the
Tigers took their first lead on a goal by Brian Bolewicki with 1:29
to play in the stanza.
Towson (4-5) was able to control much of the possession time
early in the fourth quarter. Then, the Tigers struck quickly,
scoring twice in a span of 31 seconds. UMBC committed a penalty on
Towson's ninth goal and the visitors controlled the next draw and
scored again to take an 11-8 advantage with 8:10 remaining.
Towson extended the lead to 12-8 before Lewnes scored an
unassisted goal with 5:35 to play. Towson committed a slashing
penalty on that goal, and UMBC got the face-off, but committed a
turnover and could not close the gap.
Lewnes recorded a goal and added two assists for UMBC, while
Jones scored a pair of goals and junior midfielder David
Campbell (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) posted a goal
and a helper.
Shots were even at 39-all, and UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Wes
DiRito recorded eight saves.
UMBC, which scored on all four man-up opportunities vs. High
Point on Saturday, was 0-for-4 on the evening, while Towson
capitalized on 2-of-5 chances.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday when they host Mount
St. Mary's in the final non-conference game of the regular
season.
