Perkins Qualifies for NCAA Zones as UMBC Swimming and Diving Sweeps George Washington

BALTIMORE – UMBC senior diver Tim Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) set a pair of career bests and qualified for NCAA zones in the 3-meter dive as the Retrievers bounced back from last week's performance by sweeping George Washington on Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. The Retrievers won the men's meet, 145-109, while the UMBC women defeated the Colonials, 134-113.

Perkins, who was named the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Male Diver of the Week on Wednesday, took victories on both the 3-meter (323.62) and the 1-meter (281.02) boards on the men's side, while sophomore Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) added a pair of event wins with a score of 214.42 in the women's 1-meter competition and 240.97 in the 3-meter competition.

In swimming action, the Retrievers placed first in nine of the first 10 events, including a season-best time of 1:55.59 in the 200 freestyle for sophomore Kristie Langford (Port Hope, Ontario, Canada/CDCI West). Senior Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista) continued to build upon her strong performance from last week, taking the title in the 100 freestyle for the second-straight meet and touching the wall first in a season-best time of 58.31 in the 100 butterfly. Freshman Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maris Regina) matched that, clocking in first in both the 100 (1:07.38) and the 200 breaststroke (2:21.62).

On the men's side, senior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) earned three victories, claiming the 100 backstroke (51.25), the 100 butterfly (51.48) and the 200 IM (1:54.49). Sophomore Leo Endres (Bamberg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymnasium) accounted for victories in both the 100 (57.94) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:09.61).

The Retrievers swept the freestyle events behind top finishes from veterans Reed Neuendorf (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee), Evan Carey (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Grand Island), Lauri Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) and Rob Breen (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep), while rookie Gregor Sporlein (Bamberg, Germany/Clavius-Gymnasium) chipped in his second victory in three meets in the 100 freestyle.
