BALTIMORE – UMBC senior diver Tim Perkins
(Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) set a pair of career bests and qualified
for NCAA zones in the 3-meter dive as the Retrievers bounced back
from last week's performance by sweeping George Washington on
Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. The Retrievers won
the men's meet, 145-109, while the UMBC women defeated the
Colonials, 134-113.
Perkins, who was named the Coastal Collegiate Swimming
Association (CCSA) Male Diver of the Week on Wednesday, took
victories on both the 3-meter (323.62) and the 1-meter (281.02)
boards on the men's side, while sophomore Corinna Darelius (Rye,
N.Y./Rye) added a pair of event wins with a score of 214.42 in the
women's 1-meter competition and 240.97 in the 3-meter
competition.
In swimming action, the Retrievers placed first in nine of the
first 10 events, including a season-best time of 1:55.59 in the 200
freestyle for sophomore Kristie Langford (Port Hope, Ontario,
Canada/CDCI West). Senior Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella
Vista) continued to build upon her strong performance from last
week, taking the title in the 100 freestyle for the second-straight
meet and touching the wall first in a season-best time of 58.31 in
the 100 butterfly. Freshman Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle,
N.Y./Maris Regina) matched that, clocking in first in both the 100
(1:07.38) and the 200 breaststroke (2:21.62).
On the men's side, senior Mohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) earned three victories,
claiming the 100 backstroke (51.25), the 100 butterfly (51.48) and
the 200 IM (1:54.49). Sophomore Leo Endres
(Bamberg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymnasium) accounted for
victories in both the 100 (57.94) and 200 yard breaststroke
(2:09.61).
The Retrievers swept the freestyle events behind top finishes
from veterans Reed
Neuendorf (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee), Evan Carey
(Ponte Vedra, Fla./Grand Island), Lauri Kaei
(Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) and Rob Breen
(Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep), while rookie Gregor
Sporlein (Bamberg, Germany/Clavius-Gymnasium) chipped in his
second victory in three meets in the 100 freestyle.
