Box Score LOWELL, Mass. – UMBC women's soccer's sophomore forward Alexa
Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) tallied the first multiple
goal game of her career, but it was not enough as UMass Lowell
completed a 3-2 double overtime come-from-behind victory in Sunday
afternoon's America East contest at Cushing Field.
UMBC built up a two-goal advantage, but were unable to hold on
for their fifth straight victory, as UMass Lowell scored
three-straight goals, including the game-winner in the 103rd
minute.
The Retrievers fall for the first time in five games to move to
9-5-2 overall and 4-2-0 in league play, while the River Hawks
(1-14-1, 1-5-0 AE) pick up their first victory of the season.
Quaranta took 1:33 to give UMBC a 1-0 advantage, beating the
UMass Lowell defense and the River Hawks' goalkeeper Jane
Hatzikonstantis.
The Retrievers took the advantage into the break and once again
jumped out of the gates quickly, with Quaranta striking for her
fifth goal in the last five games off a pass from freshman forward
Amanda
Dailey (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township/Monmouth) 2:19 into the
second half. The second-year forward leads the team with seven
goals and 15 points.
Less than six minutes later, UMass Lowell started its run,
scoring its first of two goals in the second half. A shot from
junior forward Emily Bracken nailed off the crossbar, but senior
back Sarah Raye was there for the rebound for her first goal of the
season.
The River Hawks sent home the equalizer in the 77th minute, as
freshman midfielder Erin Scanlon dished out a pass to freshman
forward Taylor Packwood for the chip shot over UMBC senior
goalkeeper Lauren Kadet
(Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas).
UMBC posted the only opportunities of the first overtime, with
Quaranta and classmate Nikki Boretti
(Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) notching the only shots of the
period and the Retrievers picking up a corner kick with 10 seconds
to go in the first overtime.
Sophomore midfielder Samantha Barbeito headed the game-winner,
her first goal of the season, 2:50 into the second overtime off a
cross from sophomore midfielder Selja Snorradottir.
Hatzikonstantis finished with seven saves in the contest, while
Kadet registered three.
UMBC enters the final week of the regular season tied for third
place with Stony Brook in the America East standings. The
Retrievers return to action on Thursday, Oct. 24 against Hartford
at 7 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
