BALTIMORE-UMBC senior guard Ryan
Cook (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) led all scorers with 21 points
and a retooled lineup propelled the Retrievers to a 68-57 victory
over New Hampshire in an America East Conference match-up at the
RAC Arena.
UMBC senior forward Adrian Satchell (Windsor,
Conn/Windsor) and junior guard Quentin Jones
(Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) were given starting nods for
the first time this season and both contributed ot the victory.
Satchell hit all five of his field goal attempts, scoring 10 of his
season-high 11 points in the first half. He added four rebounds and
three steals in 32 minutes. Jones provided solid defense, added
four assists and committed only one turnover at the point guard
slot in 31 minutes of work.
The Retrievers shot a season-high 51.1 percent from the floor,
hitting 24-of-47 shots, including 13-of-24 in the final 20 minutes.
UNH struggled from the outset, hitting 21 field goals on 63
attempts (33.3 percent), resulting in UMBC's best field goal
defensive effort of the campaign.
Junior post Brett
Roseboro (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) added 13 points,
seven rebounds and three blocked shots for the hosts, while
classmate Chase
Plummer (Plainfield, N.J./St. Patrick) added 11 points in
15 minutes off the bench.
UNH junior forward Patrick Konan led his side with 19 points. He
and Cook were their schools' America East Players of the Game.
It was UMBC's first conference home game and first home contest
since Dec. 12. The Retrievers improved to 1-2 in the league and
3-13 overall, while UNH dropped its fifth straight and slid to
4-11, 0-3.
There were seven lead changes in the first half, but UMBC took
the lead for good at 27-25 on a Satchell layup on brilliant feed by
sophomore guard Joey
Getz (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) with 6:06 to play
in the first half. The Retrievers extended the advantage to 33-27
before settling for a 33-29 advantage at the break.
UMBC senior guard Brian
Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Bros. Acad) hit a pair of
treys in the first 2:42 of the second half to spark an 8-2 run and
give the Retrievers a 41-31 advantage at the 16:53 mark.
The Wildcats would whittle their deficit to six points on three
occasions and had four chances to cut the lead further, but
misfired and turned the ball over two times each.
Cook had a key play to restore UMBC's advantage to ten points.
With his side leading 51-44, he hit the first of two free throws,
missed the second, but captured the offensive carom and laid in the
rebound to give the Retrievers a ten-point advantage with 8:01 to
play.
The Retrievers led by 14 points on three occasions in the final
5:07 before setting for the 11-point victory.
Cook hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor and led the Retrievers
with eight rebounds. He scored 20 or more points for the sixth time
in 2012-13, but the first time since Dec. 9 at Norfolk State.
UMBC's win snapped a three-game losing streak to the Wildcats in
Baltimore. UNH still holds a 11-9 series advantage.
