BALTIMORE- UMBC rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit, but
could not complete the comeback and fell, 67-60, to Stony Brook at
the RAC Arena.
The setback was UMBC's first at home in conference play (2-4
America East, 4-15) this season. Stony Brook (5-1, 14-5) won for
the sixth time in their last seven outings.
Four Retrievers scored in double figures, led by senior
guard Ryan
Cook (Laurel, Md./Pallotti), who scored all 14 of his
points in the second half. Junior guard Quentin Jones
(Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) was the Retrievers' America
East Player of the Game, scoring a season-best 11 points
and adding six assists, with just one turnover in 37 minutes.
Stony Brook junior guard Dave Coley led all scorers with 17
points and was his side's America East Player of the Game.
UMBC trailed, 50-35, at the midpoint of the second
half and were still down by double digits at 58-47 after Coley hit
a trey with 5:26 to play. But UMBC junior
forward Chase
Plummer (Plainfield, N.J./St. Patrick) sparked a 9-2 run
with a matching 3-point field goal. The run was capped by a
thunderous dunk by junior post Brett
Roseboro (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) which got
the Retrievers to within 60-56 with 62 seconds remaining.
UMBC quickly fouled Coley, who hit one of two free throws, but
Plummer misfired on a 3-point attempt and SBU's Anthony Jackson hit
two free throws to restore the lead to 63-56 with 36 seconds
left. Retriever senior guard Brian
Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Bros.
Acad) countered with a long three just five seconds later to
bring the hosts to within 63-59.
Jackson hit one of two free throws, but Plummer was fouled after
getting an offensive rebound with 17 seconds to play. Plummer could
have trimmed the deficit to three points, but hit only one of two
free throws and Stony Brook's Tommy Brenton made three of four free
throw attempts in the final 16 seconds to seal the victory.
UMBC started the game slowly, misfiring on 13 of its first 14
attempts from the floor and falling behind, 12-2 at the 11:33 mark
of the first half. The Retrievers did pick up the pace, hitting
10-of-19 and closing to within 33-26 the half.
But poor shooting plagued UMBC throughout, as they hit only
34.8% (23-of-66) for the contest, while SBU converted 21-of-50
attempts. UMBC outscored SBU from the floor, 55-47, but Stony Brook
converted 20-of-26 from the charity stripe, while the Retrievers
were just 5-of-7 against the physical Seawolf defense.
Led by Jones steady play, UMBC committed a season-low eight
turnovers.
Plummer, who led the team with eight rebounds, and Roseboro
added 11 points each for UMBC.
The Retrievers return to action on Sat., Jan. 26 when they
travel to Boston U. to face the Terriers in a 1:00 p.m. afternoon
tilt.
