LEWISBURG, Pa. – UMBC women's soccer was unable to come back from two early first half goals in Friday night's non-conference matchup against Bucknell at Emmitt Field, eventually falling to the Bison 3-0.

Bucknell won its fourth straight contest to improve to 4-2, while UMBC falls to 1-5-1.

"Bucknell was able to put two quick goals in very early in the game and put us on our heels," head coach Leslie Wray said. "We responded well and did a good job of keeping possession for the rest of the game.

"We need to continue to build and teach this young team." Wray continued. "We never had more than three upper classmen on the field, so our freshmen and sophomores are getting a great deal of playing experience. This will help once we get into conference play."

The Bison broke out of the gate with two quick goals, scoring 3:13 into the contest and again at the 7:09 mark to take a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore midfielder Evelyn Nicinski started things off for the Bison, notching her first goal of the season. Sophomore defender Hannah Bonotto's free kick following a UMBC foul found the head of junior forward Chelsey Garkowski and directed a pass to Nicinski, who took a shot that bounced off Retrievers' goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) and into the net.

Garkowski continued to create opportunities for the Bison, winning a fifty-fifty ball deep in the box and getting off a shot. Kadet came up with one of her six saves on the night, but sophomore defender Courtney Nelson was there for the rebound for her fourth goal of the year.

Bucknell's junior midfielder Corey Tipton added an insurance goal in the 70th minute, scoring off a scramble in front of the net on a corner kick.

The Retrievers were able to generate opportunities, registering 11 shots in the contest but were unable to put any past the reigning Brine Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week Sandita McDemott, who finished with six saves.

UMBC returns home on Sunday for the first time in five contests, to take on Longwood at 1 p.m. inside the Retriever Soccer Park. The Lancers (3-2) enter the contest having won two of their last three games and are 1-1-1 all-time against UMBC.
