Baltimore- UMBC dominated much of the action,
outshooting La Salle, 17-5, but the Retrievers and
Explorers battled to a 0-0 double overtime draw in a non-conference
contest at Retriever Soccer Park.
UMBC extended its unbeaten streak to three and is now 4-2-3 on
the campaign, while La Salle's record is 5-2-2.
The Retrievers' best chance in the first 45 minutes occurred in
the 16th minute, as senior midfielder Milo
Kapor (Toronto, Ont./Emily Carr) took a shot from a sharp
right angle that struck the near post and caromed over the end
line.
In the second half, junior forward Kadeem
Dacres (Rosedale, N.Y./Mercer County CC) created the best
opportunity, breaking down the left side and blasting a 20-yard
shot which was stopped by La Salle junior goalkeeper John McCarthy,
but he could not control the rebound. Kapor tried to gather the
carom 10 yards from the goal, but could not and La Salle cleared
the ball out of danger.
There were not shots in the first 18 minutes of overtime, but
the Retrievers had two attempts in the final 90 seconds and La
Salle junior midfielder Jidell Roach's long 40-yard effort with
three seconds left had to be parried over the bar by UMBC junior
goalkeeper Phil
Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) for his lone stop of
the night.
The Retrievers attempted 11 corner kicks, while La Salle
responded with four. McCarthy was credited with nine saves for the
visitors.
Saunders posted his fourth clean sheet of the season and the
11th of his career.
UMBC had scored at least one goal in seven consecutive games
since playing Radford to a scoreless draw in the season opener.
The Retrievers open America East play on Sat., Sept. 29 when
they welcome Vermont to Retriever Soccer Park for a 7:00
p.m. contest.
