BROOKLYN, N.Y. – UMBC junior
goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas
Aquinas) recorded six saves against LIU Brooklyn in Sunday
afternoon's non-conference women's soccer game at LIU Field, but it
was not enough as the Blackbirds used a goal late in the first half
to defeat the Retrievers 1-0.
LIU (1-3) earns its first win of the year, while UMBC moves to
1-4-1 on the year.
We were a bit disappointed with our effort in the first half,"
head coach Leslie Wray said. "We had some individual
breakdowns late in the first half and got down by a goal right
before halftime.
"Our work rate picked up significantly in the second half and we
put them under pressure," Wray continued. "Lauren Kadet was
solid in goal again. Individual efforts from Amira
Walcott, Melissa Hummel, Lilly Rydon and Rachel
McKee helped keep the game close and kept us in it."
The Blackbirds got on the board, taking the lead with 2:31 left
in the first half on freshman forward Mariana Ruas's first
collegiate goal. Ruas gathered a pass from Nicole Labo eight yards
out in front of the net and blasted home the
game-winner.
The Retrievers were unable to build off of their first victory
of the season on Friday against Saint Peter's, being outshot 12-2
by LIU, with UMBC sophomore Morgan Taylor (Severna Park,
Md./Severna Park) and freshman Alexa Quaranta (Baltimore,
Md./Perry Hall) each recording a shot on the afternoon.
The Retrievers return to action on Friday, Sept. 7 when they
travel to Bucknell.
