The UMBC women's tennis team (11-7) outlasted America East rival
Stony Brook (5-5), 5-2, at the UMBC Tennis Complex on April 6.
The Retrievers took the doubles point by virtue of a key of
tie-breaker victory. UMBC's No. 2 tandem of graduate student Shalini
Sahoo (New Dehli, India) and sophomore Josefin
Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) went the distance and
captured the tie-breaker, 7-5, to win the match, 9-8.
In singles, The Seawolves crept to within 3-2 after taking
tightly-contested matches at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. UMBC senior Carmen
Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) won a critical match at
the No. 3 position, defeating Katherine Hanson, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. UMBC
won by default at the No. 6 position.
But UMBC closed the match out by winning at Nos. 4 and 5
singles. Freshman Isabel
Aldunate (Bowie,Md.) cruised by Salome Mkervalidze, 6-2, 6-2 at
the No. 4 slot and junior Heidi
Danielsson rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (10-5) victory over Prerana
Appineni.
The Retrievers play a double-header on Saturday, facing America
East foe Albany in the morning
and Morgan State in the afternoon.
