Flushing, N.Y.- The second-seeded UMBC women's tennis team
advanced to the America East Conference title match with
a 4-0 victory over No. 3 Binghamton at the U.S. National Tennis
Center.
The Retrievers will face No. 4 Stony Brook in the championship
match at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. The Seawolves shocked No. 1 seed
Boston University, 4-3 in the second semifinal match.
The Retrievers captured the doubles point, taking matches at the
Nos. 1 and 3 positions. At the No. 3 spot, junior Kyri
Hadji (West Sunshine, Australia) and freshman Isabel
Aldunate (Bowie, Md./Home School) defeated
Hollander/Edelbaum, 8-2 and UMBC clinched the point when the tandem
of senior Carmen
Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake)/sophomore Kim
Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) outdueled
Bykovskaya/Medianik, 8-4
Berghaus won her second match of the day, defeating Hollander,
6-3, 6-0, at the No. 2 position. The Retrievers increased the lead
to 3-0 when graduate student Shalini
Sahoo(New Dehli, India) got past Santos, 6-4, 6-2 and clinched
the match when sophomore Josefin
Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) outlasted Edelbaum, 6-4,
6-4.
