Women's Tennis Dominates Singles Play, Defeats Liberty, 5-2

BALTIMORE- The UMBC women's tennis team won its third consecutive match, winning five of six singles matches to defeat visiting Liberty, 5-2, in the first home match of the year played at the UMBC Tennis Complex.

UMBC got over the .500 mark and improved to 6-5 on the campaign, while the Flames are playing a tough slate and fell to 1-8. Liberty was ranked ahead of UMBC in the Atlantic region entering the 2012 campaign.

"As unhappy as I was with the doubles point getting away from us I was equally as happy with the way the women stepped up for the singles," head coach Rob Hubbard said. "They showed a lot of character today."

Liberty captured the doubles point, as their No. 3 tandem of Rebekah Jenkins/Jessie Boda rallied to edge UMBC juniors Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) and Kyri Hadji (West Sunshine, Australia), 9-7.

Buoyed by an enthusiastic home crowd, the Retrievers captured the first three singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. No. 1 sophomore Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) and  No. 2 grad. student Shalini Sahoo (New Dehli, Indi) won in straight sets, while No. 3 senior Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) overcame Liberty's Brittany Yang, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Stange-Jonsson clinched the match for the Retrievers, defeating Annisha Domenech, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Isabel Aldunate added an insurance point, rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nicola Wellman at the No. 4 position.

UMBC travels to South Carolina this weekend for matches vs. South Carolina-Upstate and Longwood.
