BALTIMORE- Visiting Coppin State hit its first eight shots from the floor and led all the way in an 80-61 victory over UMBC at the RAC Arena.

UMBC senior guard Ryan Cook (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) led the Retriever effort with 17 points, scoring in double figures for the tenth time in 11 games. Junior post Brett Roseboro (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) scored in doubles for the sixth consecutive time and recorded his third double-double in his last five outings with 15 points and 10 caroms.

Coppin junior forward Michael Murray led all players with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The Eagles scored on 11 of their first 12 possessions of the game. They sprinted out to a 21-7 lead at the 12:24 mark of the first half before the Retrievers would stage a promising rally.

Cook started the 14-6 surge with a 3-pointer and Roseboro capped it with a dunk on a baseline drive to bring the hosts within 27-21 with 7:22 remaining. Cook blocked a shot on the other end, but UMBC turned the ball back to Coppin and Murray halted the momentum with an emphatic follow slam of an Andre Armstrong miss.

That sequence triggered a 10-2 Eagle surge and the visitors maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

Coppin State led, 41-30, at the half and came out of the locker room on a 13-4 run which put the contest out of reach for UMBC.

The Eagles cooled off dramatically from the floor in the second half, finishing the game at 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field. But UMBC attempted 25 of its 54 shots from behind the arc, and only converted on six. The Retrievers were at 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the floor for the 40 minutes.

CSU freshman guard Sterling Smith, averaging 4.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game entering the contest, amassed 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Coppin State outboarded UMBC, 41-31.

The Retrievers now enter the examination period and do not return to action until Dec. 22, when they face DePaul in Chicago.
