Stony Brook, N.Y.- UMBC sophomore midfielder Stephen
Ho (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) scored his first career
goal in the 73rd minute and the visiting Retrievers
knocked off defending America East champions Stony Brook, 1-0, at
La Valle Stadium.
UMBC won its third in a row and improved to 8-4-4 overall and
2-2-1 in league play. Stony Brook slipped to 9-4-1 and 3-2-0 in
America East.
Ho, a reserve right-side midfielder used his speed to finish the
game's lone goal. Junior forward Kadeem
Dacres (Rosedale, N.Y./Mercer County CC) drove down the
left side and curled a pass deep into the box. The ball hooked away
from Stony Brook keeper Stefan Manz and Ho charged in and chipped
the ball into the net from four yards out.
The Retrievers maintained possession for a great deal of the
remaining time, but Stony Brook did have a corner with 10 seconds
remaining, but it went well wide of the goal and the Retrievers
mobbed junior goalkeeper Phil
Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) who recorded a
three-save shutout.
"We're very excited; it was a big win over the defending
champions," head coach Pete Caringi
said. "Credit the players, they demonstrated great composure and
played a solid 90-minute game."
UMBC had the better of the play over the first 60 minutes and
built a 10-2 advantage in shots. Junior forward Pete Caringi
III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) had the best chance of the
first half, but Manz stopped his close-range header in the
29th minute.
The Seawolves nearly struck in the 60th minute,
but Saunders saved an initial chance by Raphael Abreu and Kyle
Schlesinger's rebound effort went over the bar.
UMBC outshot the Seawolves, 15-11 and only eight fouls were
whistled in 90 minutes.
After four straight losses at La Valle Stadium, UMBC has won the
last two and took a 7-6-0 series advantage over SBU.
The Retrievers will play the final two America East games of the
season at Retriever Soccer Park, hosting Hartford on Oct. 24 and
Binghamton on Oct. 27.
