BALTIMORE- The visiting Stony Brook Seawolves shot nearly 59
percent from the floor and defeated UMBC, 89-49, at the RAC
Arena.
Stony Brook won its sixth consecutive game and improved to 9-6
on the campaign and 4-0 in America East Conference play. UMBC fell
to 2-14, 1-3.
UMBC junior guard Brian
Neller (Red Bank, N.J.) hit three 3-point field goals and
moved into sixth place on the Retrievers' all-time list with 137.
He scored 13 points and was UMBC's America East Player of the Game.
Junior guard Ryan Cook (Laurel,
Md./Pallotti) led the Retrievers with 14 points.
Stony Brook senior guard Bryan Dougher led a balanced Seawolf
attack with 15 points and was his side's America East Player of the
Game. All 12 uniformed SBU players recorded points in the game.
Stony Brook never trailed. After UMBC's Adrian
Satchell (Windsor, Conn.) hit a layup to bring the
Retrievers to within 11-8 at the 15:07 mark, Dougher started a 13-0
run with a steal and layup and SBU had a 24-8 advantage with 10:15
to play in the stanza.
The Retrievers trailed, 41-19, at the break, but got to within
15 points at 45-30 on a Cook 3-point field goal 3:54 into the
second half. But that was as close as the Retrievers would get as
the visitors converted 18 of 27 (66.7 percent) second half shots to
cruise to the victory.
Stony Brook hit 33 of 56 attempts (58.9 percent) for the game,
including 7-of-12 from behind the arc. UMBC misfired on 20 of 28
attempts in the first 20 minutes and was 19-of-58 (32.8 percent)
for the contest.
UMBC has a weekend bye and will travel to Hartford for
a match-up with the Hawks on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
