Philadelphia, Pa.- La Salle's Rob Frisky scored with 13 seconds
remaining as the host Explorers stunned UMBC, 2-1 at McCarthy
Stadium.
UMBC, which fell behind for the fifth consecutive game, tied the
game in spectacular fashion with 3:34 remaining in the second half.
Junior midfielder Milo Kapor
(Toronto, Ont.) sent a through ball ahead to a cutting Kingsley
Onwuka (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood/CCBC-Essex), who buried the
shot from 10 yards away.
But the Explorers were not to be denied, as they took a throw-in
in UMBC territory with less than 30 seconds to play. La Salle's
Ryan Sepe gained control of the ball on the left side end line and
cut a ball back into the box, where a charging Frisky redirected it
inside the near post.
UMBC (3-3-2) was playing its third consecutive road game in
seven days and fell to 0-2-0 on turf in 2011. The Retrievers are
1-3-1 in their last five outings. La Salle improved to 2-6-1.
Each team was credited with nine shots apiece in the first half,
but neither team could get on the board. La Salle's Jason Plumhoff
opened the scoring for the hosts in the
64th minute, getting behind the right side of the
Retriever defense and beating Retriever netminder Dan
Louisignau (Wilmington, Del.) with a shot inside the far
post.
UMBC was credited with 26 shots, while La Salle registered 20.
For the fourth time this season, Louisignau was credited with a
career-high nine saves. Explorer netminder John McCarthy was
credited with 13 stops for the hosts.
Onwuka scored for the second consecutive game, while Kapor
captured the team lead with three assists.
The Retrievers open America East Conference play on Satuday,
Oct. 1 when they entertain Albany at Retriever Soccer Park.
Kick-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
