BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team split
a pair of matches on the final day of the Madison Bingaman Memorial
Tournament Saturday, defeating Norfolk State, 3-0, after falling to
Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-2, earlier in the day.
The Retrievers (8-4) hit .309 as a team against the Spartans and
controlled the entire match using a different lineup than the
earlier match against the Knights, winning 25-18, 25-17, 25-13.
"We wanted to give some different people a look and I was happy
to see up bounce back with energy," head coach Ian
Blanchard said. "We responded very well after a not-so-good
outing against Fairleigh Dickinson."
Sophomore Hallie
Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) once again led
the Retrievers with two double-doubles on the day, including 14
kills and 12 digs against NSU. Junior Katie
Kelly (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) hit .714 with five
kills and six blocks in the middle, while sophomore Emily
Witsaman (Medina, Ohio/Medina) hit .375.
"Hallie had a fantastic tournament and I thought Katie and Emily
in the middle were big keys for us defeating Norfolk State,"
Blanchard said.
Against Fairleigh Dickinson, the Retrievers were unable to
capitalize on a one-set lead or keep the momentum after forcing a
decisive fifth set, falling 15-25, 25-23, 25-16, 18-25, 15-11 to
the Knights.
Senior Allie
Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) had 49 assists and
18 digs, while sophomore Ali
Goc (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate)
added a UMBC season-high 23 digs.
Carter and freshman Hannah
Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales), UMBC's two
members of the All-Tournament Team, combined for 35 kills and 24
blocks.
The Retrievers return to action next weekend for the Penn
Invitational in Philadelphia.
