Women's Soccer Drops Double-Overtime Heartbreaker at Temple, 2-1

Box Score

AMBLER, Pa.—Sophomore forward Amy Savage (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier) tallied her first goal of the season just seven minutes into the game, but host Temple (2-0-0) battled back to defeat the UMBC women's soccer team (0-3-0) by a score of 2-1 in double overtime Friday afternoon at the Ambler Sports Complex.

The Retrievers controlled the game in the opening minutes of the match, which led to Savage's unassisted goal on a breakaway from 15 yards out in the eighth minute for an early 1-0 lead, their first of the season.

The advantage held to halftime, but the Owls knotted 14 minutes into the second period when defender Alyssa Kirk landed a corner kick in front of the UMBC net, where midfielder Kate Yurkovic scrambled to feed forward Morgyn Siegfried for the equalizer.

Temple fired off seven shots over the final 30 minutes of regulation, but none found the back of the net, sending the game into extra time deadlocked at 1-1. The Owls continued to put pressure on the Retrievers in the first overtime session, but UMBC's defense stood strong, forcing a second overtime period.

But five minutes in, Temple forward Niki Conn fielded a throw-in from midfield and found defender Casey Greco going up the middle and one-on-one with a defender, and Greco struck a shot on the left side of the net from 30 yards out for the game-winner.

Making her first start of the season, senior goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Germantown, Md./Northwest) recorded five saves, while Temple keeper Tara Murphy stopped four Retriever shots.

The Owls outshot the Retrievers, 22-8 in the game, including 13-2 after halftime. Temple also held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, when they host Texas State at 12 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
