Women's Soccer Blanked by Campbell, 2-0, in Home Opener

Box Score

BALTIMORE—After a four hour, 30 minute weather delay due to severe thunderstorms, the UMBC women's soccer team dropped its home opener to Campbell, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

The Retrievers took five of the first six shots of the game, but the Camels broke onto the scoreboard late in the 33rd minute when midfielder Ashley Clark, on a breakaway, collected a cross from midfielder Marissa Muller and sent the ball into the middle of the net.

Campbell added an insurance goal in the 65th minute when midfielder Melissa Messier sent a header into the box to a streaking Annabelle Gibney, who placed the ball into the top left corner.

The Retrievers' best opportunity occurred with just over 12 minutes left in the game, when sophomore back Stephanie Smith (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) sent a corner kick into the box, which freshman midfielder Paige Preston (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) headed just over the crossbar.

Sophomore goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded four saves between the pipes for the Retrievers, while Campbell keeper Ryann Torrero stopped two shots.

The Camels outshot the Retrievers, 9-7, but the Retrievers held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action on Friday, when they visit Temple.
