College Park, Md.—Sixth-ranked and senior-laden Maryland
(5-1) defeated UMBC (1-4), 15-6, in men's lacrosse action at
Byrd Stadium.
Sophomore attackman Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C.)
scored UMBC's first three goals to lead the visitors. Junior
attackman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y.) contributed a
goal and two assists and senior midfielder Jamie
Kimbles(Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's) added a pair of
helpers.
Senior attackman Grant Catalino scored six goals for the
Terrapins.
The Terrapins outshot UMBC, 12-3, in the first quarter and led,
4-0, after 15 minutes of action. The Retrievers got on the board as
Jones took an inside feed from junior attackman Rob
Grimm (Black River, N.Y.) and scored at the 12:43 mark of the
second quarter. But Maryland scored three goals in a span of 1:16
and went on a 5-0 run before Jones put away a Zach
Linkous (Jarrettsville, Md./St. Paul's) feed with 33
second left in the half.
Maryland equalized that score on a Catalino goal with nine
seconds remaining in the half and led, 10-2, at intermission. The
Terrapins led, 14-2, after three quarters, but the Retrievers
outscored the hosts, 4-1, in the final 15 minutes.
Sophomore netminder Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./The Severn
School) faced 37 Terrapins shots and made eight saves. UMBC
attempted 20 shots in the contest.
The Retrievers return to UMBC Stadium for the first time in one
month when they entertain Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 26 at 3:30
p.m.
