Baltimore—The UMBC men's
tennis team blanked America East foe Hartford, 7-0, in
the first match of the year played at UMBC's home
courts.
The Retrievers won for the third consecutive time and improved
to 8-3 on the season.
Senior Mwali
Phiri (Yonkers, N.Y.) and junior Joe
Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz.) combined to win at No. 1 doubles,
besting the duo of Aneill Bhalla and Josh Isaacson, 8-3. The
Retrievers won the doubles point with 8-1 victories at No. 2 and
No. 3 doubles.
Junior Cristian
Hodel (Constanta, Romania/Boise State) spearheaded UMBC's
singles efforts by defeating Bhalla, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1
singles. The Retrievers did not drop a set in singles –
junior Rasid Winklaar
(Willemstad, Curacao) and sophomore Gaulthier
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) only dropped one game apiece
at No. 2 and No. 4 respectively. Phiri triumphed, 6-2, 6-0 over
Bogdan Nedelcu at No. 5 singles, and senior Shane Yap (East
Brunswick, N.J.) triumphed, 6-2, 6-0 over Edgardo Ureta.
UMBC will compete at Howard on March 18, before heading to
Florida for a pair of matches over spring break.
