BALTIMORE – UMBC's Swimming and
Diving Team set season-best times in three different relays and
senior Abbey
McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) won three events,
but both the men (157-132) and women (150-144) lost to Navy Friday
night at the UMBC Natatorium.
The Retrievers set season-best times in 22 events, including
both the men's (3:09.86) and women's (3:32.20) 400 free relays and
the women's 200 medley relay (1:47.11) team. Both of the
women's teams picked up wins in the events.
Despite the loss head coach Chad
Cradock was positive about his teams'
performance. "I'm really proud of our effort," Cradock
said. "We went into the meet as huge underdogs and
performed very well, especially with the ladies putting on a great
finish there."
The women's team went back and forth with the Mids all night led
by McKenney's two individual wins, besting her 50-yard free (24.36)
and 100 free (52.39) times, as well as by juniors Amy
Fay (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) and Jennifer
Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy
Cross). Fay set new marks in the 1000 free (10:38.94)
and 500 free (5:11.11) while Kotonias put up two new times, picking
up the win in the 200 fly (2:04.40) and finishing second in the 200
back (2:05.78)
Senior Laura
Tilman (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and
sophomore Talor
Tadena (Orangevale, Calif/Bella Vista) also set new
season-bests in the 100 fly (58.41) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.21)
respectively, in addition to lowering the mark in the 200 medley
relay. Tadena's win in the breaststroke is her
second win of the season in the event. Senior Kathryn
Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) got the
Retrievers off to a fast start in the race.
"We took a huge step forward tonight," Cradock said after the
meet. "We accepted the challenged presented to us, and
fought hard until the end."
For the men, junior Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) put
in a strong effort on the diving boards, winning the 1-mtr
competition with a season-high score of 295.73.
Sophomore Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallin Secondary
Science) picked up a win in the 100-yard back while setting a new
mark in the 200 IM (1:57.26)
Also, freshman Lauri Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary
Science) continued his hot start to the season pacing the
Retrievers in the 200 free (1:41.53) and 100 free
(47.81).
The Retrievers return to the pool next Saturday, Oct. 29 when
they host George Washington to kick off Parents
Weekend. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m. at the UMBC
Natatorium.
