BALTIMORE – Senior Iman
Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) notched 11 kills
and freshman Dalton
Tolliver (Ortonville, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) recorded
double digit kills for the fifth straight contest, this time with
12, to lead the UMBC volleyball team past Providence 25-15, 25-15,
25-20 Friday night at the RAC Arena during the team's Dig Pink
match.
With the win, the Retrievers (12-9, 2-4 AE) ended a three game
losing streak as well as climbing above the Friars (6-16, 1-4 AE)
in the America East standings. The straight set win was
the Retrievers' ninth 3-0 win of the year.
Kennedy, who ranks second in school history in career assisted
blocks, added four more to bump her totals to 254 and move within
45 of the all-time record holder Kara Welniak (1997-2000).
Senior Allie
Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) continued to add to
her impressive career stats registering 31 assists on the night
while also digging seven balls.
After edging to a 12-9 lead midway through the first set, UMBC
took control with a 9-0 run highlighted by two kills and a service
ace from sophomore Emily
Vandegrift (Leesbrug, Va./Loudoun
County). Trading points from there, the Retrievers
closed out the set on an ace from Tolliver to take it
25-15. Freshman Megan
Groess(Encinitas, Calif/La Costa Canyon) notched four kills in
the set and seven for the macth.
The Friars put up a fight in the second set, but with the score
at 17-13 UMBC went on a 8-2 stretch to close out the set, once
again winning 25-15.
The third set saw five lead changes and seven tie scores, but
eventually the hitting and blocking of the senior Kennedy pulled
the home team to victory. During the final set Kennedy
notched two block assists and six kills, including the match
winner.
The Retrievers hit .350 for the match recording 40 kills while
limiting the Friars to just .109 hitting on 29 kills.
Shelagh Dolan provided the bright spot for the Friars recording
10 kills while hitting .526 for the match.
The Retrievers head back out
on the road for a three game swing beginning with a match at Stony
Brook next Saturday, Oct. 22 beginning at 1:00 p.m. The
Seawolves took the earlier meeting between the two teams in a
thrilling 3-2 victory in Baltimore.
