Vestal, N.Y.- Sophomore forward Pete Caringi
III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) scored on a penalty kick in
the 41st minute and visiting UMBC held off a
desperate Binghamton side to prevail, 1-0, in an America East match
at the Bearcats' Sports Complex.
The Retrievers are now unbeaten in four straight and are off to
a 3-0-0 start in America East play for the first time since 2005.
The America East defending champions are 6-3-3 overall, while
Binghamton falls to 4-8-0, 0-3-0.
UMBC has not allowed an opposition goal in 318 minutes of play.
Senior goalkeeper Dan
Louisignau (Wilmington, Del.) made four saves and recorded
his sixth shutout of the season.
"To got on the road and play two of the better programs in the
America East in a short span and come away with two results is
quite an accomplishment," head coach Pete Caringi said. "Binghamton
played really well. We feel fortunate to come out with a win.".
The Bearcats controlled play for most of the first half as they
tested Louisignau seven times. The most dangerous opportunity
occurred in the 28th minute, when the Retriever
netminder mishandled a serve, but Binghamton's Luke
Hallberg had his five-yard shot blocked a UMBC defender.
But in the 41st minute, Retriever senior
midfielder Andy
Streilein (Rockville, Md.) drove into the box and drew
foul around the 12-yard line. Caringi took the penalty kick and his
low drive went into the right hand corner of the net.
UMBC's was 0-for-2 coming into the game from the penalty spot.
The goal was UMBC's first in the initial 45 minutes
(2 of 14) since the 1-0 victory over FDU on Sept.
3.
Binghamton's leading scorer Jake Keegan had a few excellent
chances in the second half, but misfired in the
65th and 81st minutes and
Louisignau made an excellent save on an Adam Whitehead seven yard
attempt with 17:21 remaining.
UMBC is now 3-1-1 in the last five meetings against the
Bearcats. Binghamton still leads the all-time series, 6-4-2.
The Retrievers return home Friday night for the Homecoming
contest vs. America East rival New Hampshire. The game is a rematch
of the 2010 championship game.
