The UMBC women's tennis team opened the 2011 season with a 4-3
win over host Navy on Sat., Jan. 22.
The Retrievers won the doubles point, as both the Nos. 1 and 2
tandems were victorious. Junior Carmen Jackman
(Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and Julia
Gragera-Cano (Badajoz, Spain) won an 8-3 decision at No. 1
doubles, while senior Emily Mannix
(Hillsborough, N.J.) and partner Kim Berghaus
(Offenbach, Germany) triumphed, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles.
Berghaus captured her single match, 6-4, 6-1 over Navy's
Decquir, at No. 2 singles, followed by Jackman's 6-4, 6-4 victory
over Griffin. UMBC earned its fourth and match-winning point when
Gregara-Cano earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Navy's Ton at No. 3
singles.
UMBC returns to action on Fri., Jan. 28 when they host St.
Francis (N.Y.) at Twin Lakes RC.
