SBU senior wing Muhammad El-Amin, the visitor's America East Player of the Game, led all scorers with 26 points, hitting 10 of 17 shots from the floor. Junior guard Chris Martin added 17 points.
UMBC was led by sophomore guard Chris De La Rosa, who scored 14 of his team-high 20 points in the second half. Retriever freshman wing Shawn Grant was his squad's Player of the Game with 17 points and five rebounds.
UMBC (3-24, 2-12) played without sophomore starters Chauncey Gilliam, the team's leading scorer at 13.3 points per game, and Jake Wasco, a post player, neither of whom dressed due to injury. Only eight players were available for the Retrievers.
The game was the final home contest in the career of UMBC senior wing Matt Spadafora. He competed in his 116th career game, which ties for third on UMBC's all-time list and he made his 71st consecutive start, the longest current active America East streak.
An inspired Retriever squad led by as many as seven points at 26-19 with 7:36 remaining in the half after a Spadafora three-point field goal. But the Retrievers went scoreless in the final 3:31 of the half and the Seawolves rallied to take a 38-34 lead at intermission.
Back-to-back turnovers early in the second half resulted in Stony Brook fast break buckets, sparking an 8-0 run and a 46-36 Seawolf lead at the 16:18 mark of the half. After a driving layup by Spadafora, Stony Brook proceeded to go on a 14-3 run to take a 60-41 lead with 11:57 remaining.
The Seawolves extended the margin to 21 points on two occasions, but Grant sparked a 19-9 surge which trimmed a 68-47 deficit with 7:37 remaining to 77-66 with 2:14 to play.
But Stony Brook sophomore guard Bryan Dougher hit a long three-point field goal on the next possession to end UMBC's comeback hopes.
Spadafora scored 10 points and added six rebounds in his home finale, while UMBC junior post Robbie Jackson scored 12 points.
Dougher hit all three of his 3-point attempts in the second half and finished with 14 points, while sophomore post Tommy Brenton posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Stony Brook hit nearly 52 percent from the floor for the game, connecting on 29 of 56 shots and converted 19 of 23 free throws. UMBC was at 45.5 percent and also excelled at the stripe, hitting 16 of 19 attempts.
UMBC travels to Binghamton for a Sunday afternoon game against the Bearcats.
