Rosa and Brian
Neller scored 14 points each, but the host Duquesne Dukes
hit 30 free throws and 11 three-point field goals en route to a
101-69 victory at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
The Dukes sprinted out to a 17-4 lead as UMBC committed nine
turnovers in the first 7:45 of the game. The Retrievers would
settle down and after missing their first nine attempts from behind
the arc, hit three of their last four. Sophomore Brian
Neller hit back-to-back treys to trim the deficit to 40-30
with 2:11 to play in the half, but the Dukes hit their sixth and
seventh trifectas in the final 50 seconds to go into the locker
room with a 48-32 lead.
In a hectic first 4:19 of half, UMBC cut the lead to 54-44 on a
Wertz trey, but the Dukes scored five straight to restore the lead
to 59-44 and the Retrievers could not close within single digits
the rest of the way.
De La Rosa surpassed the 500-point plateau in his career
and added five assists.
Travis
King scored in double figures for the fifth straight game
with 11 points.
The Dukes hit 30 of 54 shots from the floor (55.6 percent) and
11 of 22 from behind the arc. They scored 36 points off a UMBC
season-high 20 turnovers.
UMBC revisits the state of Pennsylvania on Tuesday as they take
on Penn at 7:00 p.m.
