FAIRFAX, Va.--The UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving
teams are in first place going into the final day of the Patriot
Invitational after a big Saturday that included three school
records and five gold medals.
The women's 200-yard medley relay team of junior Kathryn
Moorby, freshman Talor Tadena, senior Sarah Ryan and
junior Ashley Miller broke the UMBC record and finished
third in a time of 1:44.15.
Ryan won gold in the women's 100 fly in a UMBC-record time of
55.15, while junior Pink Kinanti placed fifth in 57.69.
In the consolation final, senior Gaby Johnston finished
in a time of 56.95, the ninth-fastest time in UMBC history.
Senior Eric
Jones earned gold in the men's 200 free in a time of
1:40.06, while fellow seniorKeilan
Freeman took home bronze in 1:41.39. Three other men
scored in the top-8, including sophomore transfer Pierre De
Waal, sophomore Mike
McGee and junior Tim
Deklau.
Sophomore Tara Morrissette broke her own UMBC record
in the women's 400 IM, touching second in 4:25.05. Fellow
sophomore Jennifer Kotonias and senior Rebecca
Godwinplaced third and fourth in 4:28.35 and 4:28.79, respectively.
Godwin's time was the fifth-fastest time in school history. In the
consolation final, freshman Patty Hallberg finished in a
time of 4:30.47, the ninth-fastest time in UMBC history.
Freshman Johan
Rohtla won gold and broke the Patriot Invitational record
in a time of 49.96, the fourth-fastest time in UMBC history.
Junior Nour
Saad earned bronze in 51.44, while junior Ben
Wolbert placed sixth in 52.97.
In the men's 200 medley relay, the team of freshman Johan
Rohtla, junior John
Mendenhall, senior Brad
Reitz and sophomore Steve
Gallagher placed third in 1:33.87.
Reitz earned silver in the men's 100 fly in a time of 50.26,
while Wolbert and sophomoreSandy
Haibel finished fifth and eighth in 51.31 and 51.57,
respectively.
Junior Abbey McKenney, sophomore Amy Fay and
Miller touched second, third, fourth in the women's 200 free in
1:51.95, 1:52.97, 1:53.80, respectively. Freshman Sarah
Delvauxfinished seventh in 1:55.00.
In the men's 100 breast, Gallagher earned bronze in 58.02, while
Mendenhall and senior Dan
Weston-Dawkes finished fourth and seventh in 58.19 and
58.83, respectively.
Senior Mat
Carson placed fourth in the men's 400 IM in 4:08.10, while
sophomore Rico
Bado finished fifth in 4:08.25 and Weston-Dawkes was
eighth in 4:13.28.
In the women's 100 breast, freshman Talor
Tadena finished fifth in a time of 1:06.90, the
10th-fastest time in school history.
Three Retriever women earned all-time top-10 times, including
Moorby, sophomore Elise Blaschke and freshman Klara
Pavelkova. Moorby finished in 57.21, the third-fastest, while
Blaschke and Pavelkova touched in 57.65 and 58.50, the fourth- and
10th-fastest times.
In the women's 1-meter dive, senior Amanda
Shinholser placed fourth with a score of 188.85, while in the
men's 1-meter dive, sophomore Andrew
Eckhoff also scored fourth with a 222.85.
In the final events of the day, the women's 800 free relay team
of Miller, Fay, junior Ashley Sippel and McKenney earned
gold in 7:32.97, while the men's 800 free relay team of Reitz, De
Waal, Freeman and Jones also touched first in 6:48.53.
