BALTIMORE-UMBC guard Travis
King (New Haven, Conn.) scored a career-high 22 points,
but the host Loyola Greyhounds hit 29 of 35 free throw attempts and
outlasted the Retrievers, 83-72, at Reitz Arena.
King hit 7-of-10 shots from the floor, 3-of-4 from behind the
arc and all five free throw attempts. Three other Retrievers
finished in double figures, as forward Laurence
Jolicoeur (Queens, N.Y.) scored 12, points,
forward Chase
Plummer (Elizabeth, N.J.) added 11 points and guard Chris De La
Rosa (Washington Heights, N.Y.) scored 10 points and added a
game-high five assists.
UMBC got off to a strong start, taking a 16-8 advantage exactly
six minutes into the first half. But the fouls started to pile up
for the Retrievers, as the visitors were whistled for 13 violations
in the first 20 minutes and the hosts hit 17 of 18 attempts from
the charity stripe. Loyola took its first lead of the half on two
free throws by Dylon Cormier with 4:30 to play in the half to put
the Greyhounds ahead, 29-27.
Loyola led, 41-34, at intermission.
The Retrievers sliced into the deficit and crept within three
points at 60-57 after a Justin
Fry (New Bloomfield, Pa.) short jumper with 10:22
remaining. But Greyhound freshman guard Dylon Cormier hit seven
consecutive points in an 11-0 run which put the hosts ahead, 71-57,
just three minutes later. UMBC was unable to close within single
figures the rest of the way.
Loyola outrebounded UMBC, 42-28, and shot 51 percent for the
contest. Cormier hit 9-of-10 from the free throw line and let four
Greyhounds in double figures with 20 points.
UMBC returns home to face Central Connecticut State on Saturday,
Nov. 20.
