Williams, Caringi Score as Men's Soccer Wins at Bucknell, 2-1

Lewisburg, Pa.—UMBC (5-3-1) knocked off defending Patriot League champion Bucknell (4-6-0), 2-1, in a men's soccer non-conference contest played at Holmes Stadium.

Senior Chris Williams and freshman Pete Caringi III, both Calvert Hall products, scored the Retriever goals in the 23rdand 55th minutes respectively.  Bucknell's Tommy McCabe scored on a controversial penalty kick in the 84th minute, but UMBC hung on for the victory.

Junior Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) initiated UMBC's opening goal as he drove a ball into the box area, where Caringi flicked it back into open space. Williams, playing as a midfielder, beat his defender, ran onto the ball, and drilled a shot from the left side of the box into the right hand corner of the net.

It was Williams' second goal of the season, scoring multiple goals in a campaign for the first time in his tenure.

Caringi would add the sixth goal of his rookie season early in the second half.  Senior Levi Hoaupeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) slid a ball through to junior Nirav Kadam(Germantown, Md./Northwest/UNCG). Kadam's cross toward the far post was booted in by Caringi from close range.

UMBC maintained control until the late going when a Bucknell shot struck the hand of Retriever midfielder Danny Shannon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/American U.) in the box and the Bison were awarded  a penalty kick. Retriever netminder Dan Louisignau (Wilmington, Del/Concord/U. Virginia) saved McCabe's first attempt, but the official ruled that the UMBC keeper had stepped off his goal line early. McCabe would convert on his second attempt.

Sophomore Milo Kapor (Woodbridge, Ont./Emily Carr) nearly scored UMBC's third goal of the game in the 85th minute, but Bucknell keeper Marc Hartmann made a great save. However, the Retrievers held off the Bison down the stretch and won the first meeting between the two schools.

The Retrievers return to America East action on Saturday when they travel to New Hampshire for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with the Wildcats.
