BALTIMORE—UMBC junior midfielder Andrew
Bulls(Millersville, Md./McDonogh) scored the game's first goal
and added assists on corner kicks on the next two as the host
Retrievers blanked Hartford, 3-0, in an America East Conference
contest.
UMBC improved to 8-4-2 overall and 2-1-2 in America East play,
surpassing Hartford (5-8-0, 2-3-0) in the league standings.
The Retrievers scored in the 12th minute and
added goals in the 25th and
40th minutes of play. Defenders Daniel
Welsh (Fife, Scotland) and Liam
Paddock (Worcestershire, England) connected on headers off
of a pair of Bulls' corner kicks.
"We emphasized that in practice, that if we come out and score
quickly, they would have to come out and play us and that is the
mindset we had," Head Coach Pete Caringi,
Jr. said. "We followed the game plan."
Bulls scored the game's first goal for the second time in four
days. Senior midfielder Chris
Williams (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) slid and served the
ball from the midfield stripe to freshman Pete Caringi
III (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) racing down the right wing.
Caringi broke in two-on-one and slid the ball to Bulls, who tapped
it in from six yards out.
Both of UMBC's goals off corner kicks initiated from the left
corner. Welsh skimmed in the first one from eight
yards out in the middle of the box, while Paddock gave UMBC a
prohibitive lead, ripping in a header from near post extended, also
at the eight-yard line.
The goal by Paddock, a sophomore, was the first of his
career.
Bulls has 12 assists on the season, surpassing the 11 he
accumulated in 2009. He becomes the first player in school history
to record 25 goals (26) and 25 assists (25) and his 77 points are
now tied for seventh on the UMBC all-time scoring list.
Welsh, Paddock, the UMBC defense and junior goalkeeper Dan
Louisignau (Wilmington, Del./Concord/U. Virginia) shut
down the Hawks to post the team's second shutout in America East
play. Louisignau made eight saves, but most were of a routine
variety.
Buills was UMBC' s America East Player of the Game, while
Hartford junior forward Patrick Boucher, who attacked well on the
right side in the first half, earned the honor for the
visitors.
UMBC honored its six seniors before the contest and all
six—Williams, Kokou Assigbe,Dustin
Dzwonkowski, Levi
Houapeu, Danny
Shannon and John Paul Waraksacontributed to the
victory.
"It is a great senior class; they have meant a lot to program
one through six," Caringi said. "They have represented themselves,
their… family and the school very well. I
am really proud of them; they are leaving as winners."
UMBC improved to 6-0-1 when scoring the game's first goal and
6-0-0 when leading at halftime. The Retrievers are now
4-1-2 in October.
