BALTIMORE—UMBC freshman forward Pete Caringi
III(Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) scored his fifth goal of the
season late in the second half, but the visiting Binghamton
Bearcats got the game-tying goal in the 82nd minute
and the two sides played to a 1-1 double overtime draw in America
East Conference opener.
UMBC is now 4-3-1 on the season, while Binghamton stretched its
unbeaten streak to five and is now 2-4-3.
Senior midfielder Levi
Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill), who set up UMBC's
score was the Retrievers' America East Player of the Game, while
Binghamton's goal-scorer, sophomore forward Jake Keegan, earned the
honor for the Bearcats.
Both goalkeepers excelled in the match, as UMBC junior Dan
Louisignau (Wilmington, Del.) made a UMBC season-high nine
saves, while Binghamton red-shirt freshman Chris Hayen stopped six
UMBC shots on goal.
Each team pumped seven shots goalward in the first half and
Louisignau made a pair of dazzling stops on Keegan and sophomore
midfielder Adam Whitehead midway through the half to keep the game
scoreless through 45 minutes.
In the 49th minute, UMBC junior forward Andrew
Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) was expertly set up on
the right wing by Houapeu, but his drive from 10 yards out hit the
right post.
In the 75th minute, Bulls would initiate the
Retriever goal as his pass into space was run onto by Houapeu down
the right wing. Houapeu's deep cross got beyond Hayen and Caringi
headed it in from three yards out.
But the visitors would get the tying goal as Louisignau could
not get to a ball played into the box at the 12-yard line.
Binghamton's Ryan Walter managed to flick it to Keegan, who knocked
it into the unguarded net from eight yards away.
Neither team threatened in the final eight minutes, but UMBC
nearly got the game-winner just 38 seconds into overtime. Houapeu
was sent in down the middle of the field, where he ran
stride-for-stride with a Bearcat defender and his blast from 14
yards out was saved by Hayen.
Bulls and Whitehead each posted seven shots and four on goal for
their respective sides, as UMBC had a slight advantage in shots,
17-15.
UMBC saw its eight-year record in America East openers go to
2-3-3 and 4-1-3 in home openers. Binghamton leads the
overall series between the two teams, 6-3-2.
The Retrievers travel to Bucknell for a Tuesday non-conference
clash before resuming America East play at New Hampshire on Oct.
