PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The UMBC volleyball team won its third
straight America East contest, defeating Providence 25-15, 21-25,
25-15 and 25-12 Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Retrievers
improve to 8-12 and 4-2 in conference play, while the Friars fall
to 9-16 and 1-4 in AEC play.
"I'm really proud of our effort today, especially coming off
such an emotional five-set win at New Hampshire yesterday," head
coach Ian Blanchard.
The Retrievers were once again led by junior Allie Spaay
(Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper), who had a UMBC season-high 50
assists along with 14 digs. In two matches this weekend, Spaay
recorded 95 assists and 44 assists.
"Allie had probably her best weekend of her UMBC career,"
Blanchard said. "She was outstanding all weekend long."
Junior Iman Kennedy
(Charlotte, N.C./Independence) hit .350 with 11 kills, while senior
Sabrina
Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) recorded 16 kills
and eight digs.
Two freshmen, Hallie
Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) and Ali Goc (Oshawa,
Ontario, Canada/R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate), each tallied
double-doubles. Carter had 15 digs and 10 kills, while Goc recorded
14 digs and 10 kills.
"Hallie was one of our unsung heroes today," Blanchard said.
"When we made the switch to move her to outside in the third set,
she played great and let Ali (Goc) focus on playing outstanding
defense."
The Retrievers outhit the Friars, .253 to .134, while tallying
six service aces to Providence's two.
UMBC returns to action Wednesday for its final non-conference
match of the season, taking on American Wednesday at 7 p.m.
