Bulls Nets a Pair; Leads Men's Soccer to 5-1 Rout of Delaware

Annapolis, Md.- Sophomore forward Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) continued his torrid start, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist as UMBC (2-0-0) routed Delaware (0-2-0), 5-1, in the first match of Navy's Anders Classic.

The five points is the most for a Retriever since Kevin Mezzadra posted five in a 5-1 win over St. Joseph's on August 25, 2006. Bulls now has notched three goals and two assists in UMBC's first two games.

He put UMBC on the board in the 15th minute, picking up a loose ball and sliding it past Delaware netminder Conrad Rusnak.  Then, linemate Levi Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) sent Bulls a through ball and the Retriever standout deposited into the net from the top of the box in the 30th minute of play.

The Retrievers led, 2-0, at intermission, but junior defender Chris Williams (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) scored 80 seconds into the second half to give UMBC a commanding lead. Williams headed in Bulls'perfect serve into the right corner of the net.  Sophomore midfielder Andy Streilein (Rockville, Md./Wootton) scored his first UMBC goal in the 67th minute, converting off a scramble in front of the Blue Hen cage. Streilein transferred to UMBC after scoring four goals in his freshman season for Delaware in 2008.

Houapeu completed the scoring and recorded his second straight three-point game when he ran down and converted freshman Dave Vaeth's (Dundalk, Md./Patapsco) long pass down the left side in the 76th minute.

Freshman netminder Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) made four saves and allowed no scores in over 75 minutes of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Miguel Calderon (Bowie, Md./Roosevelt) made his first appearance for UMBC, but did allow Delaware's lone goal, scored by Courtney Hewitt in the 78th minute.

UMBC's five goals scored in the most since the team posted a 5-2 win over Hartford on Oct. 21, 2006. The Retrievers recorded 20 shots to Delaware's 15, and 19 players saw action for UMBC.

The Retrievers will take on St. Joseph's in the classic format on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
