LEWISBURG, Pa.-- UMBC won five events and five Retrievers qualified for the 2010 ECAC/IC4A Championships as the men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2009-10 indoor seasons Saturday at the Bison Opener in Lewisburg, Pa.
On the women's side, freshman Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) earned the gold in the shot put in her UMBC debut, qualifying for the ECAC Championships with a throw of 13.68m (44'10.75").
Sophomore Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.80, while senior Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) earned bronze in the 60-meter dash in 7.77. Freshman Chowan Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) was the only other medal winner, finishing third in the high jump with a mark of 1.55m (5'1").
Senior Victor Gilreath (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech/Maryland) won the men's high jump with a mark of 2.04m (6'8.25") and placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 14.38m (47'2.25"). Both marks qualify for the IC4A meet in March.
Junior Keith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro/St. Francis (PA)) earned the gold in the long jump with a leap of 6.93m (22'9"), while sophomore Joshua Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore) won the 500-meter dash in a time of 1:06.06. Freshman Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) made his Retriever debut one to remember, winning the shot put with a throw of 15.14m (49'8.75").
In the 60-meter dash, senior Adrian Arthur (Bowie, Md./Bowie) finished third in an IC4A-qualifying time of 6.89, while fellow senior Jason Powell (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) earned the bronze in the 200-meter dash in 22.82. Senior Camal Pugh (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) and Onto finished 2-3 in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.30 and 8.42, respectively.
The Retrievers return to action at the Gulden Relays back in Lewisburg, Pa. on Jan. 9.
