STONY BROOK, N.Y.—The UMBC women's soccer team (1-10-1, 0-3-0 AE) fell to America East rival Stony Brook (4-7-2, 3-0-1 AE) by a score of 5-0 Thursday evening at the Seawolves' LaValle Stadium.

Stony Brook midfielder Dominique Adamo gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, as she received a cross from forward Morgan Sims and chipped the ball over the head of UMBC sophomore goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Ijamsville, Md./Northwest) from 10 yards out.

The Seawolves stretched their lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute, as forward Meghan Gilley stole the ball from a UMBC defender on the left side of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot into the lower-right corner of the net. Stony Brook took the two-goal advantage into halftime.

Just four minutes into the second stanza, Stony Brook midfielder Gabriella Petralia struck a shot from 20 yards out that just got over the outstretched hands of Van Vlerah. Then in the 60th minute, defender Dana Adamkiewicz drove a free kick from midfield into the 18-yard box that midfielder Debbie Aller headed to Sims, who touched the ball just inside the right post to give the Seawolves a 4-0 lead. Stony Brook defender Kelly Grant closed out the scoring for the Seawolves in the 69th minute.

Van Vlerah made two saves and allowed four goals in 59 minutes between the pipes, while freshman Jaclyn Drummond (Burnaby, British Columbia/Burnaby North) allowed one goal and stopped one shot spanning 31 minutes in her collegiate debut. Stony Brook goalie Marisa Viola, the reigning America East Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded four saves in the shutout.

The Seawolves outshot the Retrievers, 19-8, and held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 11, when they host America East rival Hartford at 1 p.m. at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
