Baltimore - The UMBC men's basketball team saw its nine-game home winning streak come to an abrupt halt, as a hot-shooting Towson squad defeated the Retrievers, 82-65 before 3,087 fans at the RAC Arena. Both teams are now 4-3 on the season.
Freshman wing Chauncey Gilliam (Columbia, Md.) led UMBC with 17 points, hitting eight of 13 shots from the floor. But the rest of the Retriever squad made only 13 of 52 shots (25 percent) from the floor and three of 16 from behind the arc (18.5 percent). After hitting 18 of 20 from the charity stripe on Saturday vs. Toledo, UMBC converted just 20 of 33 (60.6 percent) against the Tigers.
Towson set a school record by hitting 14 (of 25 attempts) three-point field goals.
Senior guard Jay Greene (Whitehall, Pa.) gave UMBC its largest lead at 13-9 on his second and final three-point field goal of the game at the 13:19 mark. The game was knotted at 17-all, when Towson used a 9-0 spurt to take 26-17 advantage a little over four minutes later. The Tigers hit all six field goals attempts in the larger 17-4 run, including five-of-five from behind the arc.
Towson would convert on 10 of its first 13 attempts from long range, but UMBC hung tough and trailed just, 44-37 at intermission.
But the Retrievers came out of the locker room stone cold, missing 12 of its first 13 attempts from the floor in the first 9:18 of the half and falling behind, 65-45 midway through the stanza.
UMBC outrebounded its first Division I foe this season, 41-33, and managed 23 offensive caroms. Senior forward Darryl Proctor (District Heights, Md.) posted his second double-double of the season and 31st of his career with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Rich Flemming (Chester, Pa.) tied his season and career-best with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Guard Josh Thornton led the visitors with a game-high 21 points.
UMBC has a week off until they host Central Connecticut State on Dec. 10.
