Retrievers Drop 2-1 Decision to Boston U. on Senior Day

BALTIMORE—UMBC freshman forward Brooke Piper (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas) scored her first career goal, but it was not enough, as the UMBC women's soccer team (2-16-0, 1-6-0 AEC) fell to America East rival Boston University (12-5-1, 7-0-0 AEC) by a score of 2-1 Thursday afternoon at UMBC Soccer Stadium.

Before the game, the Retrievers honored seniors Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales), Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina), Amy Morrison (Crofton, Md./South River) and Kali Schwartz (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown South) in a Senior Day ceremony.

Just 43 seconds into the game, Terrier midfielder Marisha Schumacher-Hodge took a cross from midfielder Elizabeth Speck and tapped it into the lower-right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead that lasted through halftime.

In the 51st minute, Boston midfielder Mara Osher's long pass split the UMBC defenders and found midfielder Corie Halasz, who dribbled twice and shot the ball into the lower-left corner for the eventual game-winner.

While the Terriers controlled the first 70 minutes of the game, the Retrievers poured on the pressure in the final 20 and scored in the 81st minute. Sophomore midfielder Morgan Warrington (Magnolia, Del./St. Thomas Moore Prep) dribbled down the right side and sent a cross to Piper, who headed the ball over Terrier goalie Annie Tooley's head for her first career goal.

Bacinski recorded seven saves in the final home game of her career, while Janie Reilly and Tooley split time in the net for the Terriers and combined for three saves.

Boston U. out-shot UMBC, 14-8, and held a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks, including 7-0 in the first half.

The Retrievers conclude their season on Sunday, when they take on America East rival Albany at 1 p.m.
