Retrievers Blanked by Vermont, 5-0, in Women's Soccer

, Vt.—Host Vermont (3-12-0, 1-4-0 AEC) scored three goals in the first 22 minutes of action en route to a 5-0 victory over the UMBC women's soccer team (2-14-0, 1-5-0 AEC) in America East Conference action Thursday afternoon at Centennial Field.

In the 15th minute, forward Jessica Becker headed in a cross from forward Lexie Kaknes to put the Catamounts on top, 1-0. Three minutes later, midfielder Erin Pichiotino collected the ball at the top of the penalty box, spun with the ball and chipped it over UMBC goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) with the outside of her foot.

Then in the 22nd minute, Kaknes and Pichiotino teamed up for Vermont's third goal when Pichiotino sent a shot toward the net and Kaknes was there to clean up the rebound, sending Vermont into halftime with the 3-0 advantage.

Kaknes notched her second goal of the day in the 56th minute, putting back her own rebound. Then with less than a minute to play, midfielder Emily Milbank crossed the ball to midfielder Kristin Davenport. Bacinski came out to challenge, but Davenport stole the ball away and sent it to the back of the net to close out the Catamounts' scoring.

Bacinski made one save for UMBC, while Vermont goalie Eliza Bradley stopped five shots.

The Catamounts outshot the Retrievers, 10-8, and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action this weekend for their final non-conference game when they take on in-state rival Navy at 2 p.m. in Annapolis.
