UMBC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT, TAKES DOWN BOSTON UNIVERSITY, 63-57

Boston-Sharri Rohde scored a career-high 23 points to lead the UMBC women's basketball team to its fifth straight victory, as the Retrievers (13-8, 5-5 AEC) knocked off second-place Boston University (13-8, 6-4 AEC), 63-57, on the Terriers' home court.

UMBC's five conference victories are its most in a season since joining the America East before the 2003-04 season. With five consecutive wins, the Retrievers are also riding their longest winning streak since 1995-96.

With 23 points, Rohde has now posted 20 or more points in three of her last five games. She also led the team with eight rebounds and four assists.

Matea Pender and Brittnie Hughes also scored in double digits for the Retrievers, as Pender posted 17 and Hughes added 10.

UMBC shot 51.1 percent from the field (23-for-45), including 50 percent from three-point range (6-for-12), while the Terriers shot only 35.6 percent from the floor and hit only six of 28 three-point attempts (21.4 percent).

In a back-and-forth first half that saw 10 lead changes in the first 15 minutes, the Retrievers took the lead with 5:03 remaining on a three-pointer by Rohde and never looked back, taking a nine-point advantage into halftime at 33-24.

The Terriers pulled to within seven points at 54-47 with just over six minutes to go in the game, but Rohde hit a layup and was fouled. She made the free throw, then hit a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Retrievers up, 60-49, with 4:28 remaining and held on down the stretch for the 63-57 victory.

Erica Kovach led host Boston U. with 15 points.

The Retrievers return to action Sunday, Feb. 12, as they return home to face Vermont at RAC Arena at 12 p.m.
