MEN'S SOCCER CAN'T FEND OFF VCU, FALL 2-1 IN RICHMOND

Richmond, VA--The men's soccer team fought stubbornly, but could not hold off Virginia Commonwealth (2-3) and the Retrievers (1-3-1) fell to the Rams, 2-1.

UMBC took 1-0 lead late in the first half, when Marcus Gross scored his second goal of the year. He headed in a cross from Eric Mahon on a corner kick from close range with 3:01 left in the half.

The Retrievers held that lead for over 20 minutes, but VCU's Brian Morris tied the score by knocking in a rebound of a shot which hit the post at the 63:30 mark. Morris got the game winner with 7:37 to play, beating UMBC netminder Andy Marchica (3 saves) from five yards away.

VCU outshot UMBC, 17-5, but the Retrievers had 6 corners to 3 for the Rams. The Retrievers played without starters Powell Cucchiella (red card) and Manuel Mariel (hamstring) and were taking on a team which made the NCAA Quarter Finals a year ago and were ranked in all five polls before tough losses to Georgetown and Maryland last week.

UMBC is just 1-2-1 when leading at halftime this season.
