WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS AMERICA EAST OPENER TO MAINE, 1-0

ORONO, Maine— The University of Maine women's soccer team defeated UMBC, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improved to 7-2-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in America East play, while the Retrievers fell to 4-5-0, 0-1-0 in conference play.

Rookie Laura Harper notched her first collegiate goal at 10:55 and it turned out to the game-winner. Erin Corey made a cross to Harper, who was alone in front of the goal, and headed the ball past UMBC keeper Robin Babaris to give Maine the lead.

"Maine is a very good team," said UMBC head coach Michelle Salmon. "They are ranked second in the conference and eighth in the region. I felt we played well and had our chances, but we made one mistake on the defensive end and Maine - being a good team - was able to capitalize."

The Retrievers were led by Andrea Perkinson, Kersha Walker, J.J. Golibart, and Amy Morrison, but it was freshman J.J. Young who had the best opportunity to score when she broke in alone on Maine keeper Tanya Adorno, but Adorno tipped the ball just over the goal.

"The Maine keeper came up with a big time save in the first half to keep them ahead," added Salmon. "I felt like we just ran out of time today. It was a hard fought game and we had our chances to equalize, but just couldn't convert."

Maine outshot UMBC 16-2 in the game. Adorno made one save in goal for the Black Bears to record her fourth shutout of the season. She improves to 5-2-1 on the campaign. Babaris made six saves in goal for the Retrievers and drops to 4-5-0.
