Orono, ME--The Maine Black Bears (7-7-4, 3-3-3) clinched the sixth seed in the America East Men's Soccer Championships with a 4-1 win over first-place UMBC (10-2-5, 5-1-3) in an America East contest. Stony Brook's 4-1 win over Vermont, coupled with the Maine win gave the Black Bears a slot in the tournamentl, which opens on Wednesday.
The game had no meaning for UMBC, which clinched the #1 seed, by virtue of Binghamton's tie with Vermont earlier in the week. The loss did snap UMBC's nine-game unbeaten streak.
Maine's Keith Moore scored 23 seconds into the game to give the Black Bears the lead. The hosts also scored at 41:08 on a goal by Kevin Forgett. They added goals in the 55th and 57th minutes, before UMBC scored its lone goal at 67:46 on a score by Kevin Mezzadra. The assist on that goal went to Mike Joseph, who recorded his tenth helper of the year. Nineteen players saw action on the day for the Retrievers.
