BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to the George Mason Patriots on Friday evening at Retriever Soccer Park, despite controlling much of the match.
The Retrievers outshot their opponents 16-8 and earned ten corner kicks, compared to six for the Patriots.
UMBC (4-3-1) created several quality scoring opportunities but could not find the equalizer after George Mason (3-2-1) capitalized on their first chance of the game in the 17th minute.
Graduate student forward Jacobo Sanfeliu scored the only goal of the match shortly after a corner kick. The play began when sophomore forward Martim Sereno took a short corner to junior midfielder Javier Montava on the left side. Montava then tapped the ball back to Sereno, who delivered a precise cross into the box. Sanfeliu leaped high into the air at the five-yard line and headed the ball just over the hands of UMBC goalie
Emigdio Tormo Lopez (three saves) into the net.
Sophomore forward
Matteo Samori had a couple of promising chances late in the first half, but he was unlucky as George Mason's defenders deflected his two shots taken from inside the box.
The Retrievers nearly equalized just six minutes into the second half when junior forward
Ryan Calheira delivered an excellent ball into the box for a sliding Samori (game-high five shots). However, Samori's shot with his right foot went just wide from point-blank range.
Junior striker
Brady Geho also had a chance with 17:32 remaining, receiving another service from Calheira, but his header from five yards away went wide right.
UMBC came inches away from scoring after senior forward
Kofi Amoah's high-arching corner kick with 12:50 left. Calheira managed to send a header from the near post to junior defender
Yigit Kilic, but Kilic's shot from just a few yards out went straight to Patriots' goalkeeper Jaume Salvado (six saves)
The Retrievers will face No. 13 Vermont, the defending national champions, next Saturday in Burlington.
