Baltimore, MD-UMBC's four-game winning streak came to an end as visiting William & Mary scored a pair of first half goals to defeat the Retrievers, 2-0, in blustery conditions on the turf at UMBC Stadium.
The Retrievers fell to 11-6-2 in the non-conference affair as they will prepare for next weekend's Northeast Conference Tournament at UMBC. The Retrievers had recorded four straight shutouts, not allowing a goal for 395 minutes until the Tribe struck early in the first half. William & Mary won for the fifth time in their last six outings to improve to 11-6-1.
The visiting Tribe took advantage of the wind in the first half to outshoot UMBC, 7-1, but it was a pair of defensive mistakes that cost the Retrievers both goals. At 17:23, the Retrievers attempted to send a long ball back to their defense, but the pass was picked off by Ralph Bean, who scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season from nine yards away. William & Mary's Andreas Nydal added an insurance goal at 40:55, tallying for the sixth time this season. Teammate Doug Henry sent a ball ahead intended for Nydal, but it glanced off a Retriever defender, and Nydal knocked it into the right corner of the net from 11 yards out.
The first half scores by the Tribe were the first goals allowed by UMBC in the first half since allowing one vs. Navy 14 games ago. UMBC got the wind in the second half, but only managed four shots, as W&M netminder Trevor Upton recorded his fifth shutout of the season. The defeat was UMBC's first this season by shutout
