Emmitsburg, Md. - The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team lost to UMBC in women's soccer action Friday afternoon at the Mount St. Mary's College Soccer Field by a final score of 5-2. The Mount struck first in the opening stanza, but five second-half goals by the Retrievers dealt the Mount their fifth loss in the Northeast Conference, moving them to 4-5 in league play. Junior Keli Stevens (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) got the Mount off to a 1-0 lead in the first period, when a foul gave the Mount a free kick 40-yards out in the middle of the field. Stevens fired a hard shot that bounced off Retriever goalkeeper Robin Barbaris (Ontario, Canada) and trickled in the bottom right corner of the net, giving the Mount a 1-0 lead that they would take into halftime. Silenced by a strong performance from Mount keeper Margaret Pyzik (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) in the first period, the Retriever offense turned things around in the second half. Missy Moore (Silver Spring, Md.) got the Retrievers started, collecting a pass on the left side from teammate Lori Quintavalle (Haddonfield, N.J.) and knocking a shot past Pyzik into the bottom right corner of the net. Quintavalle, who had two goals and two assists on the day, notched her first goal just over 15 minutes later, collecting a pass in the middle of the box and shooting the ball into the bottom left for the score. Moore and Jessica Golibart (Olney, Md.) would go on to score one more goal each as the Retrievers took a 4-1 lead with 10 minutes to play. The Mount responded with five minutes left in the game, when Stevens took another free kick for the Mount from 30 yards out. Stevens once again let loose a hard shot at the goal, this time banking the ball off the left goal post and in for the score to close the gap to 4-2. Quintavalle responded with her second goal in the final minute of the game to give the Retrievers the 5-2 win. The Mount are now 4-11-1 on the season as the Retrievers move to 5-9-1 overall and 2-5-1 in NEC play.
