Total Team Effort Propels Volleyball to Road Sweep at Canisius

Buffalo, N.Y. -- Five different Retrievers recorded four or more kills as the offense hit .325, while the defense held the hosts to a .052 hitting percentage as the UMBC Volleyball team swept Canisius (25-13, 25-22, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon.

UMBC (2-1) dominated all facets of the match and only trailed twice the entire match, both times by one point in the second set. In the first set, the Dawgs hit .476 with only one error, while holding the Golden Griffins to -.074 hitting. The second set was tight, as Canisius held an 8-7 lead, but back-to-back kills by Claudia Llamas gave UMBC the lead for good. Natalie Harris was brilliant off the bench in the second set, recording seven kills on .308 hitting with an ace and a dig in the set alone. The third set was tied early at 3-3 but a Llamas kills, followed by two Grace Larrivee aces and an Alissa Grant kill put UMBC ahead for good. 

Llamas led the match with nine kills on .318 hitting, four blocks and two digs, while Hannah Dobbs continued her solid start to the season by adding six kills, five digs, three aces, two blocks and an assist. Jalynn Brown hit .500 with six kills and no errors in two sets of action, and Isabel Ostvig needed only two sets to accumulate 15 assists, five digs, four blocks and four kills (.571 hitting, no errors). Freshman Megan hunter came in to start the third set at setter and seven assists and two digs in her first career action. 

Hannah Howard had a match-high 15 digs and added six assists, and Larrivee filled the stat sheet with two kills, two aces, three blocks and an assist. Grant tallied a team-high five blocks to go with a pair of kills. 

The Retrievers return home next weekend for three matches in three days. They host George Mason on Friday night at 6 p.m., George Washington Saturday at 4 p.m., and then will unveil the 2025 America East Championship Banner and have a t-shirt giveaway on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Georgetown.
